We are in regular contact with the council about restoring the Garden following the building of the Church Hall, and some substantial progress has been made in terms of general maintenance and the rebuilding of the path. We hope that further improvements will continue to be made.
However with regard to your specific query regarding the fence, this was provided by St John’s Church. My sources tell me that its main purpose is to demark the boundary of the Church Hall from the Rest Garden, but that there was never any agreement, nor any reason, to fully enclose the Rest Garden.
As for seeking to enclose it so that dogs can be let off their lead, then this would rather go against the principle of the area being a Rest Garden. The Council have agreed to provide (although not yet implemented) a facility to allow owners to collect dog litter. However, in response to pressure from other members, we are also in discussions with Council about formally making this a ‘dogs on lead’ area. Given the original spirit of the intention behind the establishment of the Rest Garden, I can but support this position. Clearly this may not be what you want to hear!
