Since the completion of St John's Church hall, the original promises that the rest garden would be restored to the way it was, have not been kept. Some slow progress has been made but there are no signs that it will be returned to a fully enclosed area, suitable for letting dogs off the lead. The new six-foot fence on the east side inexplicably falls short of meeting the perimeter fences at either end. It would be interesting to know if the Church or Council intend to keep to their commitments.
A planning application has recently been submitted to significantly extend The Avenue Nursing Home. The extension increases the number of bedrooms from 18 to 30 and over doubles the floor area over 3 floors plus a new basement. Our members are gene! rally supportive of a level of extension to this building to improve care facilties, but there is a common view that the proposal will create a massive building that will totally dominate the site and be out of keeping with the area. There are also implications for parking and for deliveries/ collections. Failure to object to an enlargement of this magnitude could also set a precedent for a number of the other care/nursing homes in the area. A planning application has recently been notified to the neighbours of the Glaisdale school site, proposing demolition of the existing buildings and rebuilding of 13 flats in two blocks with off-street parking for 17 cars, 13 in the old back garden. The Association has received a significant number of calls about this, not just because of the impact on the immediate neighbours, but more importantly because of the precedent that this will set for the building of flats anywhere within the South Cheam Special Policy Area.
